The rich and famous are often the target of this heinous crime but current statistics indicate that average people also have a threat in locations where there are issues such as extreme poverty, political instability, terrorism and corruption.
Official kidnapping statistics are difficult to obtain – primarily because incident classifications vary from country to country and many kidnappings are not reported for fear of retaliation by the kidnappers or fear of corruption and ineptitude of responders. However, the overall trend shows an increase in incidents of kidnapping between 2010 and 2012.
